Summer may be quickly coming to an end, but since this summer hasn’t been quite as I had envisioned at the beginning of the year, I’m hanging onto every morsel of that lingering summer energy. I can’t get enough of those late summer sunsets, summer produce and lazy summer weekends firing up the grill.
Today’s recipe is a summertime staple and one of those summer foods that I just don’t want to quite let go!
These Easy Baked Beans have been my go-to recipe for years! In fact, I shared this favorite side dish recipe in a recipe round up the first year or two of Kitchen Concoctions’ existence, but decided it was such a treasured recipe that it desperately needed fresh new photos and a page all of its own!
And while my beloved Root Beer Baked Beans (that I shared last summer) always receive rave reviews, today’s version is the recipe I make the most often because it is so darn easy and only calls for a handful of ingredients – most of which are pantry staples!
This baked bean recipe is so easy since you are simply doctoring up store bought canned baked beans and basically just dump and stir everything together.
This is also a stovetop baked bean recipe (as opposed to baking the beans in the oven), which drastically cuts the cooking time in half and is perfect for summer when you don’t want to turn on the oven.
I love this Easy Baked Bean recipe so much! It holds so many memories as it has been served at countless family gatherings and summer celebrations for decades!
Not only is it a tried and true recipe, these beans have the perfect balance of flavors – smoky and sweet, tangy and bold – and is the perfect side dish for these lingering summer days filled with grilling and summer eats.
Helpful Tips and Information:
Ingredient Substitutions:
Canned baked beans – You can use any brand or flavor baked beans, but I usually make this easy baked beans recipe using Bush’s Baked Beans. I typically use the “vegetarian” flavored baked beans so that this recipe is made without bacon for my vegetarian friends and family (or those that don’t eat pork); however, the “original” flavor or “brown sugar” flavors also work well.
As written this recipe is dairy free, egg free and gluten free, however, please read the label of the beans you use carefully to ensure that they meet these dietary requirements.
Brown sugar – Dark brown or light brown sugar can be used in this recipe.
Fresh diced onion – Granulated onion powder can be used in this recipe. Simply omit the fresh onion and canola oil called for in the recipe below and replace it with 1 teaspoon onion powder.
What to serve with this Easy Baked Beans recipe?
These simple baked beans are the perfect side dish for so many summer grilling recipes and classic barbecue dinners. From Slow Cooker Smoked Brisket to Memphis Style BBQ Pork Sandwiches and Spicy Bar-B-Q Bacon Wrapped Chicken Kabobs.
How to make baked beans in the slow cooker?
I’ve made this Easy Baked Bean recipe MANY times in the slow cooker and it works extremely well!
Simply omit the canola oil and stir together the onion, beans, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard and garlic powder in a 6-quart slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours; stirring occasionally.
Oven Directions:
If you would like to make this recipe the traditional way by baking the beans in the oven, please follow these directions:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Heat oil in a large Dutch oven over medium high heat.
- Add onion and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in beans, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
- Transfer oven safe pot of beans to preheated 400-degree Fahrenheit oven and bake for 30-40 minutes or until beans are heated through and thickened.
Can baked beans be frozen?
Yes, baked beans freeze incredibly well! Simply transfer cooked and cooled beans to a freezer safe food storage container or freezer safe baggie and seal. Freeze beans for up to 2-3 months.
To serve, thaw frozen beans in refrigerator and then reheat in a saucepan over low heat until heated through.
